>Belly {en}
noun ; the abdomen, especially a fat one
Belly dancing involves movements of the abdomen such as belly rolls, circles and flutters and was one of the first forms of preparation for childbirth in ancient civilisations. In ancient times, women would dance around the labouring mother with these movements encouraging her to copy the pelvic movements to induce contractions.
The Belly dance was also danced by the Egyptian temple goddess for religious ceremonies and so dance became part of the Egyptian culture.
The dance was influenced greatly by Indian Gypsies and therefore spread widely throughout Egypt, The Middle East and Europe.
Today it has melded and fused into many dances in many different cultures, including a spectacular dance on a wheel between hands and clay, bellying out a piece of sculpted earth.
This was my first attempt at "bellying out" a shape on the wheel. To make this shape, you throw a normal cylinder and then press out carefully from the inside to create the rounded out belly look!
